WHICH RENTAL VEHICLE?
Match the right vehicle to your itinerary.
Renting a vehicle in Namibia gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace, but the right vehicle depends on your route, comfort level and travel style. Many main routes are on gravel roads, so it is worth choosing a reliable vehicle with good ground clearance, especially if you are travelling to remote lodges, national parks or less-developed regions. A 4×4 is not always essential, but is normally recommended. When comparing prices, look beyond the daily rental rate and check insurance excess, tyre and windscreen cover, additional drivers, cross-border fees, camping equipment, fuel costs and what support is available if something goes wrong. A good vehicle choice can make a self-drive trip feel much easier and more enjoyable.
2x4 Vehicle
This is the more affordable option, but your planned route should be carefully considered. It is best if you are sticking to the main asphalt roads. Higher clearance is your main concern on gravel, so an SUV may be a good compromise.
4x4 Vehicle
The standard option for the majority of people travelling around Namibia. It gives you better clearance and better traction on gravel roads. A must if travelling on more remote and sandier roads, and highly recommended during the rainy season.
Fully Equipped Vehicle
Ideal for travellers planning a camping self-drive trip. These vehicles usually include practical equipment such as a rooftop tent, fridge, kitchen setup and recovery basics, making it easier to travel independently through Namibia’s more remote regions.
